Maintaining Your Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is an investment that will offer rewarding insulation and visual appeal for years. To keep your siding at its best, it is important to take on these exterior maintenance tips. Exterior cleaning is something you’ll want to keep in your annual routine, and it’s easy!

Pressure Washing

Pressure washing is a simple solution, but how many of us have access to one of those? If you don’t have a pressure washer, you don’t have to live with dirty walls. Cleaning your siding is as simple as a spray bottle or garden hose and a cleaning brush or sponge. You can also use a mild dish soap to help remove dirt, dust and build up.

Moldy siding

When we don’t keep up with our cleaning cycles, mold can occur. Luckily, mold can be an easy clean up. Our go to solution is mixing up white vinegar and water. Use about 30% vinegar with 70% water. Use your brush or mop to wipe downwards in order to avoid dirty water from getting into the slats. If you have white siding, bleach and water is your answer. Mix 1 quart of liquid laundry bleach with 1 gallon of water. Rubber gloves is highly advised here. This should cover a 10 x 20 area, and you can let it sit for five to ten minutes to reduce the need for elbow grease. Whichever mixture you chose, you will want to work from top to bottom, and try to keep the chemicals off your surrounding vegetation.

Pest Damage

When we don’t keep up with our cleaning schedule, sometimes clogging or pest damage can occur. Routinely cleaning weep holes, drainage systems, and other areas that have room for pests is a good way to prevent expensive damage. Check out or video about cleaning window weep holes here.
